Growing up hearing the passion of the Christ, I never liked Barabbas. I thought he got a free ride off Jesus just because the Jews were so angry, so threatened by Jesus.

Up until last week in mass, a priest asked, “But aren’t we Barabbas?”

Aren’t we freely given freedom or salvation? Don’t I, a sinner with a poisoned and ugly heart get traded in while a man with a pure and holy heart suffers? I may not have done anything that warrants imprisonment or death, but God knows how I’ve sinned.

Now I know Barabbas in the passion of Christ is you and me – a guilty child of God who gave His own to set me free. This humbles me more than I can say and thank you doesn’t seem like enough. But for now, thank you Jesus.
